Is FIFA money hungry or just a bunch of bullies?

Despite all the wonderful and positive things that have come out of this World Cup, FIFA and its heavy-handed tactics are not going unnoticed. The world’s football governing body is not hiding the fact that it is making an enormous amount of money from the tournament, but this doesn’t mean it needs to resort to bullying in order to show the world who the football boss is. Some of Fifa’s handling of situations has even threatened to overshadow the wonderful game unfolding on the pitch.

Fifa’s income for this World Cup cycle, from 2007-2010, is estimated to be at least $3.2 billion. Almost half of that money comes from sponsorship and licensing, while the rest originates from the sale of TV rights around the world. FIFA has forced South Africa to fall in line with what they call “Ambush Marketing.” This is Fifa president Sepp Blatter’s attempt to quash the threat of any brand that is not an official sponsor of the World Cup. Basically, if FIFA doesn’t receive money for the use of promoting a brand, it doesn’t want to see that brand exist in or around the World Cup.

The example that best encapsulates Fifa’s shortcomings in this area is that of the young Dutch women who were arrested while supporting Holland in their first World Cup match against Denmark. The 36 women, who were detained on the grounds of ambush marketing, were wearing scantily clad orange outfits with the word Bavaria, a beer company, on their tops. The arrest and detainment of these women highlights the pressure Fifa feels it’s under to protect its interests, in particular, its economic interests. By allowing only Budweiser, the official sponsor, to be sold and advertised at the stadiums in South Africa, Blatter is protecting Fifa’s pockets while bullying smaller brands in the process.

Not only is Fifa demonstrating its greed with situations like this, but also its bullying tactics by swiftly arresting these women, and trying two of them in World Cup courts specifically set up in South Africa for just such minor infringements. The main question remains as to why Fifa hasn’t decided to simply sue the beer company rather than threaten two innocent employees with up to six months in prison. If they really felt their monetary interests were in danger, than this would be the appropriate response. Instead, they’ve decided to bully small beer company Bavaria, while simultaneously giving it an enormous amount of publicity by calling more attention to the situation than was ever necessary.

Mossel Bay to construct new FIFA-standard pitch ahead of 2010

No Comments 22 August 2009

Engineers and contractors have moved onto site to begin construction of Mossel Bay’s new FIFA-standard football pitch on the Extension 23 Fields – a significant step in readying the town for the 2010 World Cup, and one that has been applauded by the Local and the South African Football Associations.

A representative of the Municipality of Mossel Bay, Shane de Bruyn, handed the site to Nic van der Merwe of Entsha Henra contractors, and Jan Brink of SSI Civil Engineers and Environmental Consultants, on Friday, August 14th.

During the handover, Mr. Brink said that the project would see the replacement of two existing, under-sized fields with one full-sized, FIFA-standard soccer pitch

He said that the surface of the existing field was below standard, “so we’ll remove all the grass, and the topsoil, and then we’ll reshape the field and install irrigation and sub-surface irrigation systems.

“Then we’ll do layer works and replace the topsoil before we plant the new grass.”

He said that the fields currently had an east-west orientation, but that the new pitch would be oriented to face north-south.

Mr. Brink said that maintenance after completion would be the responsibility of the municipality, but, “we’re installing an irrigation system with time switches,”  to ensure that the grass will be kept in world class condition.

Mr. Harris thanked the Garden Route Casino Community Trust for its substantial contribution towards the construction of change-room facilities – which have been lacking since the fields were first developed.

Speaking on behalf of the Trust, casino manager Robin Seabrook said that the funds had been donated because, “our community trust is here specifically to uplift the community of the Greater Mossel Bay Area, and the upgrading of sporting facilities is one of the things we’re committed to.” Continue Reading

The Confed Cup is mission accomplished

1 Comment 29 June 2009

The 2009 Confed Cup ended on a high as evidenced by the closing ceremony on the final day. Again, the VWV Consortium did not disappoint with a stunning show that equalled the very high standards of the opening ceremony.

The visiting teams were all very satisfied with the organisation and very high standard of facilities that were available to them. The US team was particularly impressed with everything including the accommodation. Superstar players such as Kaka of Brazil gave South Africa the thumbs up saying that the country would put on a very good show next year.world-cup-09We were able to see the minor things that still need to be improved such as the Park and Ride transport system, to and from the stadium, and minor security complaints. The tournament was also very successful from a sporting perspective with Bafana Bafana showing that they have the potential to project a good image of our football by finishing fourth. MANAGERS

Hristo Stoichkov is now a Sandawana

4 Comments 26 June 2009

I predicted that Mamelodi Sundowns would make a spectacular move in the close season and it seems they have done just that with the signing of Hristo Stoichkov as Head Coach on a two year contract. He will take over from Ted Dumitru who had taken charge of the club on a caretaker basis.

Sundowns-2009This is the second very high profile coach Sundowns have roped in having parted ways with Henri Michel who was unable to complete a full season at the club. Stoichkov made his name as a player when he was part of Johan Cryuff’s ‘dream team’ at Barcelona that won four league championships in a row and a European Champions Cup in 1992.

He was also named European Player of The Year and was the top goal scorer at the USA ’94 FIFA World Cup which earned him the Golden Boot Award. Unfortunately it seems as if his signing was preceded by allegations of match fixing at his previous Romanian club after his charges drew a match under very controversial circumstances.
